Ablustery rain slashed his face as he rode through the deepening gloom. His mind still reeled at Caroline’s taunts, at her defiant admission of adultery, at her betrayal with his dearest friend. But once his fury had ebbed enough for rational thought, he’d realized he had to pursue his reckless wife. Caroline was far from being an accomplished horsewoman, yet she had galloped blindly away from the house, with no thought for the brewing storm or the waning afternoon light.

The gray outline of the Roman ruins crouched in the distance. The pile of crumbling stone walls was her favorite retreat on the estate. She would have come here, he was certain. Yet with the gusting rain, he could see no sign of either Caroline or her mount.

Then he spied the dark, crumpled shape at the base of the wall. Fear speared through him at the sight of her slender form lying so still and silent.

His heartbeat pounding in his ears, he forced himself to dismount, to kneel beside her. With trembling fingers, he touched her rain-wet face, her pale lips, the base of her fragile throat, feeling for a pulse, any sign of life.
